NOTE

After spending months trapped in our national COVID-19 quarantine, I desperately needed a change of scenery - both physically and emotionally. So, I decided to write and shoot a goofy comedy short heavily influenced by Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Of course, the only place that was absolutely perfect to shoot was a mile-long hike up a steep cliffside. And of course, there were only four crew members on a given shoot day to carry equipment, wardrobe, and crafty up said cliffside. And of course, I decided it was imperative to use full-weight chain mail and gauntlets for authenticity, which was schlepped up said cliffside. If this short shows no other influence of Monty Python, the sheer unnecessary exhaustion of production was extremely Terry Gilliamesque at the very least.

With that said, I’m extremely grateful for those who worked on this project with me. I could not have asked for a better Greg the XIV than Ross Bergen. A key to acting in a comedy is to fully commit to the seriousness of a character or situation when the situation or character is absolutely ridiculous. Ross was fully committed to delivering a fully formed character, which gave so much more depth to this piece than I anticipated. Ross kept Greg trapped between an egregious ego, waning confidence, and pitiful lack of manliness. Meanwhile, the Queen of the Woods was played by the endlessly talented, Remi Moses. Any actor would have played the trope of a ultra hard-nosed female warrior in this short, but instead Remi kept her grounded, casual, and almost approachable. Stripping away the trope made Greg’s ending even funnier.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my crew of Max, Michael, and Britt for following my lead on this crazy little two-day shoot.

Questiny is in the final stages of post-production and will be making its rounds on the festival circuit this up-coming year.
